The neon of the butterflies and the call of the macaws are enough to remind anyone they are somewhere tropical. As you exit your bungalow to begin your day, the theatrics of nature is in abundance from iguanas frozen like statues on rocks to the Muppet show of sloths hanging from branches.
Located in between the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea, Costa Rica offers a nature lover's paradise. Lush rainforests backdrop the magnificent coastline. National Parks and volcanoes await on the inside and top the list for most tourists. For the adventurous, canopy tours over treetops and waterfalls while navigating zip lines are a must. An afternoon of surfing can also attract a beginner at one of their surfing schools, or to areas that attract even the most experienced surfer.
Lots of tourist resort deals out there, so choices are of plenty, including package deals with surfing and yoga retreats combined.
Gay Tourism
Gay tourism increases every year, but the government has taken no real position on it. Similar to a "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, gay life in Costa Rica is neither encouraged, nor discouraged. The country's position on the subject is not at the highest and like most Latin countries, it's very religious. Although, rumor caught on quick that gays and lesbians travel a lot and like to spend money: problem solved. Though it is suggested to exercise caution at night in the streets, like any coutntry. Known for an exciting nightlife, enjoy an evening at one of the gay bars in San Jose or see a local drag show. Always plenty to do and there is safety in numbers.
Major gay and gay-friendly hotels are located in San José or in areas around Manuel Antonio, where a lot of gay snowbirds have even purchased or built homes there. While the country does experience over 150 inches of rain, most schedule their Costa Rican journey in the dry season from December to April.
